About the Kuroishi Neputa Festival

The main feature of Kuroishi’s Neputa festival is that it is possible to see both doll and fan-shaped Neputa floats. Aomori Nebuta and Hirosaki Neputa both serve as representative festival’s for Aomori Prefecture, but since long ago doll and fan-shaped floats have co-existed in Kuroishi.
Another prominent characteristic of Kuroishi Neputa is the pictures that are drawn on the back of the floats, which are there to see watchers off. The front of the floats usually depict pictures of warriors, so the backs are adorned with images of beautiful women.
These somewhat lonely images provide a good contrast with the magnificent pictures on the front, charming spectators with the fantasy world that they create.

About the Kuroishi Yosare

・Kuroishi Yosare is a Bon dance that has first started hundreds of years ago. Each year on the evenings of the 15th and 16th of August, around 3,000 people get together and dance through the streets of Kuroishi!

・Kuroishi Yosare is a traditional Japanese folk dance, has its origins in a love song from roughly 500
to 600 years ago. It gradually transformed into and spread as a Bon Odori, a traditional form of dance
performed during Obon (a Japanese Buddhist festival to honor the spirits of ancestors) in mid-August.
In 1958, the present day “Mawari Odori” (dancing around a tower) and “Nagashi Odori” (dancing
through the city) dances were choreographed. In 1982, the National Folk Dance Federation of Japan
designated Kuroishi Yosare as one of the three major Nagashi Odori dances in Japan Kuroishi
Yosare is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan.
